Shivapuri Hill day hike is a popular day hiking route from Kathmandu valley. Shivapuri hill is the second highest hill surrounding the Kathmandu valley. Shivapuri hill lies in a transition zone between subtropical and temperate climates, the vegetation consists of natural forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. Shivapuri National Park is home to 177 bird species, some endangered and rare, 19 species of mammals, and 150 species of butterflies. Shivapuri hill day hike provides a chance to enjoy nature close to the city.

The total hiking time is approximately 5-6 hours. The trail begins from the army check-post, near Budanilkantha. The hiking trail goes along the rugged road through the pine forest up to Nagi Gompa. From Nagi Gompa, it is a steep uphill hike through oak, rhododendron, and bamboo forest to Shivapuri National Park. The hilltop provides Himalayan views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal, and Kathmandu valley below.

Brief Itinerary

Our guide and vehicle will pick you up from your hotel and drive to Budhanilkantha. After obtaining an entry permit at the army check post, it is an uphill walk to Nagi Gompa(a Buddhist nunnery) with sweeping views of Kathmandu valley below and the snow-capped peaks. From Nagi Gompa, the trail goes uphill through oak, rhododendron, and bamboo forest for another three hours until you reach Bagduar, the source of the Bagmati river. At the hilltop, enjoy the splendid view of Kathmandu valley and the mountains beyond, and then retrace your hike back to Budanilkhanta and drive to your hotel.
