Gangtey Phobjikha Valley
Central Bhutan
Gangtey is the hilltop village above Phobjikha Valley, though the two names are often used interchangeably. The village is known for Gangtey Monastery, an important Nyingma Buddhist centre and a landmark overlooking the valley. The monastery’s history and architecture are worth exploring; more broadly, the area is known for its open landscapes, rural character and winter visitors.
Phobjikha is a wide glacial valley at about 2,900 metres, with a stream meandering through grassland and thickets of dwarf bamboo. Farmland lines the lower slopes, where families grow potatoes and turnips. Beyond the fields, forests of blue pine, birch, maple and rhododendron cover the hillsides. The contrast between the open valley floor and wooded ridges gives the area a spacious, peaceful feel.
The valley’s central wetlands and surrounding landscape are protected as part of Bhutan’s national park system. This conservation area helps safeguard the valley’s distinctive habitat and the wildlife that depends on it, especially the black-necked cranes that arrive from the Tibetan Plateau each winter. They gather in the central grasslands, where dwarf bamboo provides important habitat. Cattle and horses graze here during the warmer months, helping keep the bamboo short and the feeding grounds open. The cranes’ arrival is celebrated each November at the Black-Necked Crane Festival, held near Gangtey Monastery.
Visitors can learn more about the cranes and their habitat at the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre, which overlooks the valley. Walking trails offer a gentle way to explore the landscape and pass through villages, fields and woodland. The Gangtey Nature Trail is a popular choice, with broad valley views along the way. Whether visiting during crane season or in the greener months, Phobjikha offers a quieter glimpse of Bhutanese rural life and mountain scenery.
The valley is home of Wind Horse Tours’ Gangtey Horse Ranch.
