Discover the Untouched Nature, Lush Forests, and Rich Birdlife of Bhutan
Bhutan is a nature lover’s paradise, where pristine landscapes and protected forests cover over 65% of the country. Nestled between the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan boasts a diverse range of ecosystems—from subtropical jungles in the south to alpine meadows in the north—making it one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots.
Bhutan’s vast forest cover is home to an impressive array of flora and fauna. Towering evergreen trees, moss-covered rhododendron forests, and bamboo groves create a magical landscape, perfect for outdoor exploration. Thanks to the country’s strong conservation policies and expansive national parks, Bhutan remains a sanctuary for rare and endangered wildlife, offering an enchanting environment that captivates all who venture into its wilderness.
For birdwatchers, Bhutan offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With over 700 recorded bird species, the country is a haven for avian enthusiasts. Highlights include the endangered black-necked crane, Himalayan monal, rufous-necked hornbill, Great Hornbill, white-bellied heron, Satyr tragopan, and the elusive Ward’s trogon. Whether you’re trekking through remote valleys or quietly observing from a hide, Bhutan’s birdlife is as mesmerizing as its landscapes, providing a rare glimpse of some of the world’s most endangered and beautiful species.
Best Time to Visit for Birding and Wildlife
For most parts of Bhutan, the best time to visit for birding and wildlife is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when conditions are optimal for wildlife sightings and birdwatching.
For high-altitude regions like Jomolhari, Laya, Lunana, and trekking areas such as Drukpath and Dagala, the summer months are also ideal. This is the peak season for blooming and vegetation, although it tends to be wetter in the temperate and foothill regions.
The cooler months from November to February offer excellent conditions for wildlife viewing, especially in the lowerlands and foothills of southern Bhutan. These months also provide clearer visibility, allowing for stunning views of distant mountain peaks.
