This Gokyo Lakes Trek is a fantastic alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. Moreover, Gokyo Ri, at an altitude of 5,357 provides an awe-inspiring panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, among other peaks.
Many trekkers regard the vistas from Gokyo Ri to be equally or even more impressive than those from Everest Base Camp. The Gokyo Lakes Trek commences with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, offering breathtaking aerial vistas of the Himalayas. Starting from Lukla, the trek follows the Dudh Koshi valley, meandering through charming villages such as Phakding and Namche Bazaar.
Initially, the trail aligns with the traditional route to Everest Base Camp until reaching Namche Bazaar, a pivotal acclimatization point for all treks in the Everest region. Spending a couple of nights in Namche aids trekkers in acclimatizing to the higher altitude before continuing the journey.
Beyond Namche Bazaar, the trail deviates from the classic Everest Base Camp route, ascending through picturesque villages such as Hilltop, Dole, and Machermo . It follows the path alongside the Ngozumba Glacier, Nepal’s largest glacier, eventually reaching the stunning Gokyo Valley. Two days are dedicated to explore the wonders of Gokyo Valley before retracing the steps back, descending through Dole, Namche Bazaar, and finally returning to Lukla.
