Gaden Choedpa
Gaden Choedpa is an important Tibetan Buddhist festival celebrated in honor of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. This festival is observed on the 25th day of the 10th month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, typically falling around November. It is a time for Tibetan Buddhists to offer prayers and express gratitude for Tsongkhapa’s teachings and spiritual legacy.
The festival is celebrated with great devotion at Gaden Monastery, which Tsongkhapa founded in the 15th century. Monks and devotees gather to recite prayers, chant mantras, and perform rituals to honor Tsongkhapa’s contributions to Tibetan Buddhism. Special rituals include offerings of butter lamps and incense, as well as sutra recitations and meditation sessions.
In addition to religious ceremonies, cultural celebrations are held, with Tibetan opera and traditional dances depicting the life and teachings of Je Tsongkhapa. Gaden Choedpa is a joyous occasion for the Tibetan Buddhist community, reinforcing devotion, faith, and unity.
