Trashigang Tsechu is held within the courtyard of Trashigang Dzong (also spelled Tashigang), in eastern Bhutan. This four-day festival, organized by the State Monastic Body, draws devotees and spectators from remote villages across Trashigang District, neighboring Trashi Yangtse, and the highland valleys of Merak and Sakteng.
One of the festival’s most striking features is the presence of the semi-nomadic Brokpa communities from Merak and Sakteng, whose vibrant attire adds exceptional color and character to the celebrations. Throughout the tsechu, sacred mask dances and religious rituals are performed, creating a deeply spiritual and festive atmosphere.
On the final day, the highlight of the festival unfolds with the unfurling of a giant Thangka, or Thongdrol, a sacred scroll painting believed to bestow blessings upon all who behold it.
