Buddha Jayanti is a highly significant day for Nepalese Buddhists and many others. It falls on the full moon of the month of Baisakh (April–May). On this “thrice-blessed” day, Buddhists commemorate three pivotal events in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth, his attainment of enlightenment, and his passing (Mahaparinirvana).
Devotional gatherings take place in Buddhist shrines and monasteries across Nepal. At Swayambhunath, for example, devotees chant prayers and light butter lamps. Early the next morning, smaller shrines are visited for worship. Parades wind through Kathmandu and Patan, and Buddhist homes display special flags.
