The Red Machhendranath Rath Jatra, also known as the “Chariot Festival of Rato Machhendranath,” is one of the oldest and most significant festivals in Nepal. Celebrated annually in the Kathmandu Valley, particularly in Patan, it honors Rato Machhendranath, the deity of rain and harvest, revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.

The festival, held during the summer months, involves constructing an enormous wooden chariot adorned with traditional decorations. The statue of Rato Machhendranath is enshrined in the chariot, which is pulled through the streets of Patan by enthusiastic devotees. The procession is accompanied by music, rituals, and prayers, symbolizing a plea for timely rains and agricultural prosperity.

The festival culminates with the Bhoto Jatra, where a sacred jeweled vest is displayed to the public. The Rath Jatra fosters unity, cultural celebration, and spiritual devotion, making it a cherished tradition in Nepal’s cultural calendar.
