Nepal is a landlocked country. There are two ways to get into Nepal: by air or overland. The most popular means is by air – several airlines connect Kathmandu with other major cities in India, South East Asia, and the Middle East. There are still a considerable number of clients who like to travel overland. This happens when they combine their trip to Nepal with Tibet or India tours.

By flight
Kathmandu Airport was the only international airport in Nepal. But now, Gautam Buddha International Airport has also come into operation. There are several International Airlines with direct non-stop flights from the Middle East and other cities of Asia to Kathmandu. International flights from Europe, America, and Australia connects through connecting flights from Dubai, Doha, Muscat, Kuwait City, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangkok, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Dhaka, and Shanghai.

Overland
There are several ports of entry and exit while traveling overland. The most commonly used port of entry if you are coming from India is Sunauli, Raxaul, and Kakarvitta.

Sunauli border is the most popular entry point if you are coming from Varanasi. It is about 266 km from Sunauli to Kathmandu or you can ride to Gautam Buddha International Airport at Lumbini and fly to Kathmandu.

The next point of entry is Raxaul in Bihar. From Raxaul, it is about 5-6 hours drive to Kathmandu.

If you are coming overland from Darjeeling or Sikkim, you can enter Nepal from Kakarvitta(Pani Tanki). After you exit at Pani Tanki, India, crossover to Nepal at Kakarvitta. There is a regular bus service from Kakarvitta to Kathmandu and Pokhara. Also, you can take a ride to Bhadrapur airport and fly to Kathmandu. Bhadrapur is about an hour’s drive from Kakarvitta.

If you are in Tibet, you can enter Nepal by crossing the border at Zhangmu-Kodari and Gyirong-Rasuwa and then take a bus to Kathmandu.
