Dargah Mosque (Jami Masjid) || Tomb of Sufi Saint

An important Sufi site has nice atmosphere about it. Next to the Fatehpursikri Palace/Fort is a beautiful Mosque, said to be the copy of the mosque at Mecca. It is one of the biggest mosques in India. The main entrance is through an impressive 54m high gate called Buland Darwaza (victory gate). The gate was added after Akbar’s victories in Gujarat in 1576. In the middle of the courtyard is the Tomb of Sheikh Salim Chishti, the Muslim Sufi saint who predicted the birth of Akbar’s sons. The tomb is made of red sandstone faced by marble and has one of India finest lattice screens. Just as Akbar did 4 centuries ago, childless women come to this tomb today and tie a coloured thread to the jails. In a gesture of thankfulness they come back when their wish is granted.
