Kodaikanal, better known as Kodai, is a stunningly situated, on the southern crest of Palani knolls, about 120km northwest of Madurai. Situated at an altitude of about 2,133-m high, Kodai is the only hill station in India, set up by Americans. The hill town is renowned for its educational institutions, set up American missionaries in 1840s for European children. The hills plantain fruits and plums are known for their freshness and taste throughout South India. Nature walks are best experienced in Kodaikkanal. Bicycle around the lake, short pony rides and visit to the Botanical garden, Caves etc..are some of the most done activities here. Kodaikanal is very famous because of the unique flowering shrub called Kurunji (Strobilanthus Kunthanus) that booms only once in 12years. After the stretch of temples of Tamilnadu, it is the place to unwind and relax before the next steps of tours to cross the borders into Kerala.
