Lower Subansiri
Ziro at approx 1550m is the district headquarters of Lower Subansiri district. It is a plateau surrounded by pine clad gentle hills, and tranquil rice fields. The region is home to Apa Tani tribes, who live in bamboo stilt house, decorated with totem poles. Both men and women have facial tattoos and women wear huge wooden plugs in both sides of their noses. Apa Tanis are the famed farmers; originators of a distinctive system of mixed paddy and fish cultivation and they practice Donyi Polo (worship of sun and moon).
