Maduo || Mato or Maduo in Machukha

Mato (Maduo) (4300m) in Golok Tibet Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai province is one of the coldest counties of greater Tibet. Snow can fall here any day of the year. It lies at the source of Yellow river (330km from Jeykundo or Yushu and 495km south-west of Xining, spectacular drive with excellent road condition in both directions). The area around Mato is purely nomadic with many yaks and sheep. The town is one street shops divided into new and old section. The newer section has few rudimentary accommodations with communal toilets. It is quite common to experience the high-altitude sickness here. Small clinic with one resident doctor provides medication for travelers and refill Oxygen cylinders.
There is a small monastery on a hill on the east end of town with many prayer flags around it. There are several marshy plains dotted with tiny lakes and there are two particularly large and beautiful lakes for Ngoring Tso and Kyaring Tso. However to visit these lakes one will need additional day.
