Malappuram literally means -˜a land atop the hills' and is situated 50 kms southeast of Kozhikode. Bounded by the Niligiri Hills on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west, Malappuram is enriched by three great rivers flowing through it - the Chaliyar, Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzha. Once the military headquarters of the Zamorins who ruled the Malabar region, this district has been the venue of many an uprising. The hill country has also contributed much to the cultural heritage of Kerala. It was a famous centre for Hindu-Vedic learning and Islamic philosophy. The temples and mosques of this area are well known for their spectacular festivals.
