Tarangambadi or Tranquebar is a small coastal town in Nagapattinam district. It was a Danish colony in India from 1620 - 1845. Tarangambadi means place of the singing waves. The place is famous for its Fort Dansborg, built by a Danish captain named Ove Gedde as the residence of the Governor and other officials for about 150 years. It is now a museum hosting a collection of artifacts from the time of Danish presence in the region. With a fascinating history as a centre for the pepper trade, Tarangambadi offers the visitor an insight into this peculiar part of Denmark's imperial past.
