Yumthang Valley || Yumthang Valley

Yumthang Valley also known as the -˜Valley of flowers' is situated at a distance of about 25kms from Lachung. With rolling meadow surrounded by mountains, it is the grazing grounds of yaks. It is situated at an elevation of 3,560m and about 150km to the north from Gangtok. The valley is surrounded by forested hills of mainly rhododendron trees, snow capped peaks, and treeless Tibetan plateau stretching far off into the distance. It is also home to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary with over twenty-four species of the rhododendron. A tributary of the river Teesta flows through the valley and through the town of Lachung, the nearest inhabited centre. In the spring, rhododendron and primula bloom with a surreal shade over the whole area. And there are also few sulphur hot springs that is believed to have curative power.
