Phewa Lake (Phewa Tal) is a serene freshwater gem nestled in Pokhara, recognized as the country’s second-largest lake at roughly 4.4 km², situated at about 742 m above sea level. Surrounded by lush hills and framed by the majestic Annapurna range, the lake’s calm surface often mirrors the iconic summit of Mount Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail), creating a stunning double image visible on clear mornings.
The eastern shore, commonly known as Lakeside or Baidam, is a vibrant stretch of hotels, cafés, restaurants, bookshops, and souvenir stalls, making it an ideal spot to unwind, shop, or enjoy lakeside dining. While the southwestern shore remains relatively undeveloped, dominated by dense forest (locally called Rani Ban) and traditional hamlets, offering a peaceful setting for nature lovers
At the heart of the lake lies a small island featuring the Tal Barahi Temple, a sacred two-story pagoda dedicated to the Hindu goddess Barahi. It is accessible only by boat and holds special significance during festivals.
