Mumbai prevoiusly known as Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra. It is the country’s financial powerhouse and its vogue centre of fashion, film and after-dark frolics. Many archaeologists believe that the sculptures inside these caves date back to the 9th century. The most famous sculpture here is the one of Ardhanarishvara, the divine hermaphrodite. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum (previously Prince of Wales Museum) is another wonderful place to visit. The museum has ancient exhibits of Indian history including the Indus Valley Civilization artifacts. Other attractions in Mumbai include the Gateway of India, Hanging Garden, Malabar Hill and the Chow Patty Beach.
