Gangtok || Capital of Sikkim
Gangtok situated at an altitude of 1650m is the capital and the largest town of Sikkim. Gangtok which literally means -˜hilltop' is a city with a good mixture of modern and old world charm. Its population is about 100,000 and from different ethnicities such as the Nepalis, Bhutias and Lepchas. The city sprawls down over the west side of a long ridge flanking the Ranipul river, with magnificent sceneries and excellent views of the Kanchendzonga range.
In 1894, the ruling Sikkimese Chogyal (King), Thutob Namgyal, transferred the capital to Gangtok from west Sikkim. In the early 20th century, Gangtok became a major stopover on the trade route between Lhasa in Tibet and cities such as Calcutta in British India. After India won its independence from Britain in 1947, Sikkim chose to remain an independent monarchy, with Gangtok as its capital.
Gangtok being at a moderate altitude enjoys a pleasant and a mild temperate climate all the year-round.
