Chimi Lhakhang || Fertility Temple

The temple, adorned with hundreds of prayer flags, graces the edge of a picturesque plateau overlooking fertile rice fields and river below. Chimi Lhakhang is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kunley, also known as 'The Divine Madman,' who lived from 1455 to 1529. While revered as a master of the Mahamudra Buddhist tradition, he is equally remembered for the provocative nature of his teachings, often employing strong sexual symbolism.
In Bhutan, Drukpa Kunley is a cultural icon, inspiring a rich tapestry of tales blending fact with fiction, weaving a captivating narrative around his persona. Originally, Drukpa Kunley erected a chorten at this site, which later evolved into the temple constructed in the 15th century.
Chimi Lhakhang holds deep significance as a pilgrimage destination, particularly cherished by childless couples seeking blessings.
