Gelephu

Gelephu or Gelyephug is located on the plains in the south central Bhutan, bordering state of Assam, India. It is about 30 kms east of Sarpang, which is its Dzongkhag or district headquarter. Gelephu is connected by road from Shemgang and Trongsa and another road from Wangdue, which goes through Chirang. The road to Phuentsholing or Samdrup Jogkhar is through India.
Gelephu is the only place in Bhutan where there is extensive plain land, and it is where Government of Bhutan has planned for another international airport. Its close proximity and well established connectivity with India, and its location as a nodal connection for the central parts of Bhutan makes it one of the preferred locations for future development. In the recent years, many Bhutanese from around the country have bought land and built houses here, at the prospect of seeing it develop soon, as the next big commercial town of Bhutan.
For tourism, the town itself may be just a gateway but the roads leading north towards Zhemgang, then further into central Bhutan or the road to the Thimphu via Chirang, Damphu and Wangdue are very spectacular in their own right. As you climb up from the plains, you will gradually cross several hills with many picturesque villages and diverse vegetation that are home to rich flora and fauna. Shemgang is around 5hrs drive and around 5hrs to Wangdue on a different road.
