Wangdue Phodrang Dzong

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong was originally constructed in 1639 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. It was later expanded by the Fourth Desi, Gyalsey Tenzin Rabgye, who added two more storeys to the Uste. Over the years, the Dzong suffered damage from fires and earthquakes and underwent several reconstruction and extension projects. However, a devastating fire on June 24, 2012, nearly destroyed the entire Dzong, leaving only the lower walls standing. The monumental task of rebuilding began in 2014, and after its completion, the Dzong was reinaugurated on November 11, 2022, by the present King.
