History of Zangdopelri Lhakhang, Phuentsholing

Zangdopelri Lhakhang is a relatively modern temple, yet it has become one of Phuentsholing’s most cherished spiritual landmarks. Local accounts suggest that the lhakhang was first constructed in the 1980s, inspired by the celestial paradise of Guru Rinpoche. Its design—three levels representing different aspects of the Guru’s life and teachings—has remained unchanged since its original construction.

A major renovation was carried out around 1990, during which the structure was strengthened, the murals were refreshed, and the interiors were further refined. Despite these improvements, the builders preserved the temple’s original form and traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship, ensuring that its spiritual essence remained intact.

Over the years, the surrounding park area has undergone several redesigns to better serve both locals and visitors. Additions such as the large prayer wheels, landscaped gardens, footpaths, and comfortable benches have made it a pleasant and peaceful public space. These enhancements have transformed the area around the temple while keeping the lhakhang itself unchanged, apart from periodic repainting.
