Major Nepal Festivals

• Dashain: Dashain is the most significant Hindu festival in Nepal. Dashain symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Families come together to receive blessings from their elders.
• Tihar: Also known as the festival of lights, homes are illuminated with oil lamps and candles, and the festival culminates with Bhai Tika.
• Bisket Jatra: Celebrated in Bhaktapur and Thimi, this festival marks the Nepali New Year. It features the pulling of massive chariots through the streets and various traditional rituals.
• Indra Jatra: Indra Jatra is celebrated in Kathmandu, honoring Lord Indra, the god of rain. The celebration includes masked dances, the erection of a ceremonial pole (Yosin), with the procession of the living goddess Kumari.
• Rato Machhendranath Jatra: This festival is celebrated in Patan, where a towering chariot carrying the deity Rato Machhendranath is pulled through the city to bring good harvest and rain.
• Teej: Teej involves fasting and prayers for marital bliss and the well-being of spouses. Women dress in red, sing devotional songs, and dance in temples across the country.
• Mani Rimdu: Celebrated in the Everest region, this festival includes masked dances and prayers, symbolizing the triumph of Buddhism over the ancient Bon religion.
• Tiji Festival: Held in Upper Mustang, Tiji is a three-day ritual known for its masked dances and chants, aiming to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity.
• Gai Jatra: Gai Jatra is celebrated in Kathmandu Valley. It is a festival of remembrance for those who passed away during the year. Families participate in processions, often with humor and satire, to ease the pain of loss.
• Yartung Festival: Celebrated in the Mustang region, this festival marks the end of summer with horse races, archery, and traditional dances, fostering community bonding.
• Buddha Jayanti: This festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Lord Buddha. This sacred day is observed with prayers and rituals.
