Dakshinkali || The temple of blood thirsty goddess
Dakshinkali is a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. It is about an hour and a half drive from Kathmandu. The drive passes through the Chobar gorge, which was supposed to be created by Manjushree to drain out the water from the valley which was once a lake. The road passes through the small village of Pharping, where there is a sacred cave, where Guru Rimpoche is said to have meditated. A short distance downhill from Pharping is the Dakhsinkali temple, famous for the animal sacrifices. Animal sacrifice are carried out as an offer to the deity. The main deity in the temple is the black stone, six-armed form of Kali, standing on a prostrated figure. Most sacrifices are made on Tuesdays and Saturdays. People make the sacrifices in order to appease the goddess and get their wish fulfilled.
