Sauraha || gateway to Chitwan National Park
Sauraha located about 23km from Narayanghat city close by the Rapti River and the Chitwan National Park is the eastern gateway to Chitwan National Park. It was a quaint Tharu village of mud and daub huts and houses, with half a dozen mud and daub hotels but now it has grown into a remarkable town full of western style hotels and resorts with modern amenities, good restaurants, Internet cafes and gift shops to cater the requirements of the tourists that flock here. The village of Sauraha is separated from the national park by the Rapti River and during the dry season one can wander over the sand dunes and walk along the mud roads to other Tharu villages. By road Sauraha is about 165kms from Kathmandu and 145kms from Pokhara. There are also daily regular flights from Kathmandu and Pokhara to Bharatpur. From Bharatpur it is short drive of about 30min(16kms) to Sauraha. The Chitwan National Park is home to Royal Bengal tigers, rhinoceroses, bears, leopards, crocodiles and monkeys to name some, and several species of birds and butterflies. Chitwan National ParK(Sauraha) is best known Safari park in Nepal, Sauraha offers a multitude of activities. You can either take elephant or jeep Safari to observe the wild animals in their natural habitat, take a jungle walk, visit the Tharu museum and Tharu village, go for bird watching, visit the elephant breeding centre or simply enjoy the sunrise and the sunset view.
